Shuffle the article sort order

When listing links to articles, Big Medium displays the most recent articles first, using an article's publication date to determine its display order.

You can change an article's display order by changing its publication date. If you wanted to bring an old article up to the top of the list, for example, you would go to the article's edit page in the Big Medium Article Editor, and change the publication date to today's date. (The publication date is listed in the "Display Preferences" panel of the article edit page).

Saving the changes automatically rebuilds the home page and section pages to reflect the new link order.

Defeat spammers

Big Medium allows your site's visitors to e-mail article authors without revealing the author's e-mail addresses to spammers.

Many spammers have programs that "crawl" websites, harvesting e-mail addresses. Because Big Medium can relay visitors' messages without publicly displaying authors' e-mail addresses, the software avoids the "spambot" problem.

Create content subsections

Your Big Medium demo site came with four main content sections: Tour, Techniques, Solutions and News. You can use the Section Editor in the Big Medium control panel to add new sections or subsections to the site.

Content subsections allow you to subdivide main sections for finer organization and categorization. To add subsections to one of the main sections, click the "Section Editor" link in the left-column menu of the Big Medium control panel. Go to the panel for one of the main sections and click the "New subsection" link. Fill out the form on the next page (you can leave the template and navigation graphic sections blank), and click Save.

Different Views for Every Account Level

Call it a "need to know" interface: The menu of the Big Medium control panel offers your site contributors only the options that are relevant to their tasks.

Big Medium offers five different types of user accounts to allow you to control access and privileges for your site's contributors. When your demo site was set up, you received a "webmaster" account, which offers broad controls over the appearance and design of the site. "Administrator" accounts see a similar set of options.

The options for "writer," "editor," and "publisher" accounts are simplified, however. Template and Setup options are not offered, providing a simpler, more focused interface for your users.

Look for yourself: Click the "Add New User" link in the left-column menu of the Big Medium control panel. Create a new user account with "editor" privileges, and sign in as that user to see the interface differences.
